Hi Gingie - you asked about my flash...I'm a Canon girl (although Nikon is just as good, and sometimes better in certain settings), so my flash is the Canon 580EX II. Your flash is a very good flash. A lot of professionals use it. I think you and I are in the same boat in that we don't completely understand the capabilities of our little shoe mount flash.
You are right...natural light is the best, but in low-light settings (and for me - outdoor settings) I often use a flash so that the quality of the photo is not sacrificed when my external surroundings are out of my control. When properly used the flash helps create a beautiful expsoure without creating the blown-out effect that some built-in flashes do.
Anyway, I know very little about my flash, and it has been frustrating for me at times, so I'm trying to learn more in hopes that I can use it to it's full capability.
I don't know if you saw the 1 year photos I took of Gabriel (you will find them on my photog blog), but I used my flash in those settings. All but one of the photos was taken with my flash. The photo that I did not use the flash on I had to slow my shutter speed down quite a bit in order to compensate for the lack of light in the shaded area where we were taking pictures. As a result my favorite picture of him is very blurry, because a slower shutter speed means that my son's movement is captured in the exposure. Capturing movement isn't always bad, but in this case I wanted a crisp, clean photo.
Anyway, if you look at the photo you will see the blur and you will also see the the entire tone changed versus the other photos I took with the flash.
So, I've gone on WAY too long (as usual), but I just thought I would share that. :)
