It certainly gives the picture a contrasting "pop!" I think it all depends on the look you are going for. Personally, I think for this particular photo...your sweet, soft little boy...I like the softer look of the first picture, but maybe make the colors pop more by adjusting your histogram (levels) and saturation. Those are just my thoughts (for whatever they're worth)
I was also going to tell you that if you start taking pictures for people (or even for you and your family) and you want an affordable, proffesional print use www.mpix.com. They provide professional quality prints without having a contract with them. I have been really pleased with their prints and their quick delivery, and they have options galore if you ever want to do a gallery size or other specialized things with your photos. Just thought I would share. :)
I would have to say I like the first one best. But maybe try it on a different photo.
